Myth-Busting FAQs: Exercising After 40
Think fitness after 40 means slowing down? Think again. Here are the most common myths we hear and the truth behind each one.
-
The research says otherwise. Adults in their 40s, 50s, and beyond can absolutely build lean muscle mass with the right programming. The approach changes, but the results don't have to
-
Inactivity typically makes joint pain worse over time. The right movement, particularly functional, low-impact training, reduces inflammation, strengthens the muscles that support your joints, and often eliminates the pain that made you hesitant in the first place.
-
You actually need to train smarter, not harder. Recovery, mobility work, and progressive loading matter more now, and when the program is right, the outcomes are just as meaningful.
-
Starting from a low baseline is exactly what we're trained to work with. Liz's background in functional movement and injury-modified programming means there is a safe, effective starting point for every client, regardless of fitness history.
-
Many clients begin coaching with chronic pain, old injuries, or current discomfort. With proper screening and individualized programming, movement is often the most effective tool for reducing pain, not a reason to postpone it.

Every KinectedFit option (Private, Group, Kinected Blueprint, and Functional 40) is built on the same evidence-based programming by Liz. What changes is how much direct contact you have with her, not the quality of the plan.
Why Functional Fitness and Mobility Matter After 40
Staying fit after 40 isn't about looking a certain way; it's about living fully.
Muscle Mass Preservation
After 40, the body naturally loses 3–5% of muscle mass per decade without deliberate resistance training. Functional fitness preserves lean mass, which directly affects metabolism, posture, and independence.
Joint Mobility and Longevity
Joints stiffen not from age itself, but from inactivity and chronic compression. Controlled, progressive movement increases pain-free range of motion.
Balance and Fall Prevention
Balance is trainable at any age. Stability work built into a functional program has measurable impact on fall risk within 8–12 weeks.
Metabolic Resilience
Structured resistance and conditioning training helps improve insulin sensitivity, stress regulation, and sleep quality as hormones shift after 40.
Mental Clarity and Mood
Adults who exercise consistently report better focus and emotional regulation across the whole day, not just during workouts.
Confidence and Independence
Moving without pain, getting up from the floor without thinking about it, keeping up with grandchildren: these are the markers that matter.
Medical Conditions Should Not Hold You Back
One of the most common reasons adults over 40 delay starting, or avoid starting altogether, is a medical history they believe makes exercise unsafe or unavailable to them. Liz Santos-Hall has spent 26 years working with exactly this population.
“Conditions Liz regularly works alongside include: osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, post-surgical recovery (hip, knee, shoulder), herniated discs and chronic back pain, lymphedema, fibromyalgia, post-cancer treatment recovery, and general deconditioning after long periods of inactivity.”
Every Private Coaching client begins with a comprehensive intake covering injury history, current medical status, medications that affect training response, and a functional movement screening. Nothing is generalized, nothing is assumed.
Group Coaching members complete a health and injury questionnaire before their first session, and Liz adds modifications to the group program where needed.
Our Self-Guided Programs are designed for adults without medical conditions. If you're managing a condition or injury, Coaching with Liz is the safer, smarter place to start.
